Job description

Our client is the operator of rail services across the metropolitan Sydney area. They also operate the Rail Operations Centre and are responsible for the maintenance of assets including tracks, trains, signals, overhead wiring, stations and facilities.

They are currently looking to engage a Technical Writer to assist with Fleet Maintenance on an 8 month contract basis, WFH and Burwood.

The Technical Writer is responsible for updating Standard Operating Instructions (SOIs) that describe the activities necessary to complete maintenance tasks in accordance with industry standards, regulations, and WHS legislation.

The Technical Writer will also develop new SOIs required to support the expanding scope of heavy maintenance for OSCar and Tangara Train Fleets.

The role will liaise with subject matter experts and operational staff to ensure SOIs support the delivery of safe and reliable services for Sydney Trains and NSW Trains.

Key accountabilities
  • Lead and initiate the review and development of SOIs derived from the result of risk assessment, consultation with subject matter experts, operational advice, standards, regulatory requirements and legal obligations.
  • Research, gather, verify, and document SOIs and any other reference documentation, as required.
  • Engage with and manage stakeholders in a complex environment in the context of an operational environment.
  • Organise and facilitate meetings and workshops between various stakeholders and subject matter experts (e.g., as part of issues identification or consultation).
  • Prepare reports and briefings on the status of SOIs and issues identified, assess options, or provide recommendations for management consideration.
  • Provide administration and first level support for the users of work instructions in the organisation’s knowledge management site.
  • Support the Division Manager Business Systems and Compliance in achieving overall business readiness objectives with focus on the delivery of SOIs and other end user support documentation.
Essential requirements
  • Tertiary qualifications within a relevant discipline or demonstrated equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in writing operating procedures, preferably for large and complex organisations, including monitoring and reporting on status.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with subject matter experts and operational staff and delivering documents to stakeholders’ satisfaction outcomes within agreed timeframes.
