CGC Projects in Focus - Parramatta Light Rail

Our blog series, CGC Projects in Focus, has been highlighting major projects across New South Wales and Queensland, providing information and commentary on the developments and the resulting opportunities to the engineering, construction and infrastructure sectors.

The project in focus for this blog post is the $840 million Parramatta Light Rail, also referred to as the Western Sydney Light Rail.  This exciting new project - a collaboration between Transport for NSW, Downer and CPB Contractors - proposes to create connections and help build communities in Western Sydney. The light rail will allow both locals and tourists to travel and explore the best that Parramatta has to offer.

Plans for the Parramatta Light Rail

Stage one is expected to be completed in 2023 and includes constructing a two-way 12-kilometre track. The route has been carefully designed to link attractions, residential areas and the business district. The Light Rail is expected to provide transport between:

• Parramatta Central Business District
• Parramatta North Growth Centre
• Westmead Precinct
• Bankwest Stadium
• Powerhouse Museum and Riverside Theatres
• Camellia Town Centre
• Rosehill Gardens Racecourse
• Telopea
• Western Sydney University campuses

Stage two extends the project to create routes that connect stage one to Melrose Park, Ermington, Sydney Olympic Park and Wentworth Point. It will add an additional nine kilometres of light rail track and is expected to be completed by 2026.

Who will benefit from the Parramatta Light Rail?

It is estimated that once completed, the Parramatta Light Rail will be used by around 28,000 people daily, with a light rail service every 7.5 minutes in peak periods. Benefiting residents and visitors alike, the route has been carefully planned so that roughly 130,000 people will live in walking distance from a light rail stop.
