Hi all and welcome to the first CGC Newsletter of 2019 – what a prosperous year we have ahead!

Reflecting on the month so far, it has been great to see everyone returning from the Festive period and holidays refreshed and ready to tackle the year. With many tales told the office has been full of adventure and stories of good times – however the social butterfly Lee will be able to disclose more on this.

In regard to the Industry it has been full steam ahead with many projects rolling over into 2019 and many more set to kick off in the first quarter of the year. Azri will be giving his insight into what to watch and what is coming up in the Civil and Structural Design sector and we look forward to a busy and fulfilling year ahead.

Civil & Structural Design Update with Azri Azlan

2019 is set to be a very busy year for the civil & structural engineering market in Sydney. Spending on transport infrastructure remains high and it’s quite likely we have not even reached the peak of this cycle. Major projects such as Westconnex, which is ranked among the largest infrastructure projects by deal size globally in 2018, and Sydney Metro are just a few examples of the scale of work taking place in Sydney. This, however, comes with its own set of challenges. The shortage of talent and experience and the consequent fast tracking of less talented staff up the ranks has led to some of the financial failures and poor contracting outcomes, an example being the Light Rail project for Sydney which has been plagued by delays.

Major infrastructure projects aside, the commercial, education and healthcare sectors are still going strong. Positions in highest demand are Senior Civil Engineers, Senior Structural Engineers, Project Managers, Business Development Managers, Associates and Directors. All in all, it’s a very exciting time to be a Civil or Structural Engineer in Sydney. It will be interesting to see which companies have put together appropriate resourcing strategies to cope with such growth in an already scarce candidate market. Many staff took advantage of the long break by taking trips overseas – with some heading back to the UK to spend Christmas and new year with friends, family and loved ones.  Some went on their own exotic adventures – with Stewart heading to Canada, Billy on an amazing safari in South Africa, and Maria spending her time in Fiji and Vanuatu just a few hours flight away.
