Welcome to the final edition of the year. What a year it’s been and as we reflect on our achievements and disappointments, we continue to grow and learn from each experience. A big thank you to our candidates, clients and associates for joining us on this terrific journey we call recruitment.

Our exciting announcement this month is the opening of our new Brisbane office. David Hope has moved north with his family and is looking forward to servicing the ever increasing needs of the Brisbane Building & Construction markets. If you’re up that way, you can visit him at Level 6, 140 Creek Street, or give him a call on 0406 665799.

This editions’ industry insight comes from our newest staff member, Matt Weighill, who has hit the ground running and now has a very busy contract desk in the Building area.

With the Christmas and New Year break around the corner, the Building team at CGC have had a cracking year and can firmly say that the Sydney market is still as busy as ever, with NSW clearly being in a “Building Boom” across all aspects of construction.

Numerous clients are hiring now for the New Year to make sure they are set to deliver their pipelined 2016 projects. With this in mind there has been a solid increase in the amount of qualified contract staff taken on by major projects to assist with specific tasks or issues. CGC have had fantastic reviews from our clients for contractors we have provided for short and long term assignments. This has resulted in contractors either being taken on as full time employees or re-used for multiple projects.

From an employer’s perspective, the main benefits of using contract staff is that it gives you flexibility with work flow and allows you to “pay as you go” for site members as and when they are needed. It also gives you a short term solution while you are searching for the right candidate or an option for a specific aspect of a project.

Two major factors we are up against as recruiters and employers:

1: Skilled candidate shortage: This is seen as an ever growing problem across Australia due to a declining “younger” generation coming through the ranks as either tradesmen and construction professionals. This was acknowledged at the MBA awards dinner here in Sydney where the continued need to invest in apprenticeships was hotly discussed topic.

2: Influx of major development: There has been a vast amount of projects simultaneously landing in the NSW market which has created a significant shift in demand for skilled construction professionals.

CGC Recruitment currently has multiple vacancies for Site Personnel across New Build Construction, Refurbishment and Fit Out projects, which include the following positions: Leading Hands, Foreman, Site Manager’s and CA’s.

CGC celebrated Christmas early this year to accommodate the mid December departure of Hopey up to Brisbane. We had a terrific day at Nielsen Park on a sunny December day. As has become custom at our staff Christmas parties, we started with a game of beach cricket. Captain’s Rory and Dan selected their teams and the game went from friendly to competitive during the course of the day.

Hopey was disappointed to be bowled out by Glynis for a duck, but had quite forgotten it was vice versa last year. We broke for lunch at the Nielsen Park Café and a quick swim but the focus was the cricket and the competition was fierce. A good day was had by all and well done to Team Rory for the victory

CGC staff were also treated to a dinner with our respective partners last night. Bishop Sessa in Surry Hills hosted us and provided some interesting and delicious cuisine. Thanks to Nick and Jim for putting it on.

This month we also celebrated Jim’s birthday with an old fashioned jam and cream sponge cake and a pat on the back. Many happy returns Jim.

Rory, our resident Grinch, recently met his arch nemesis Santa. He was a reluctant participant to get dressed up but when he knew it was for charity he did it justice.  He says he only did it “For The Kids” but you can tell by his grin he’s loving it – we may convert him to a Silly Season fanatic yet! The whip around the office for donations raised a massive $470 for the Create Foundation who provide programs and services to children and young people in care.

We wish all our readers and supporters a very Merry Christmas and we’ll be back with you in the New Year.
